We want a beach where the water stays ankle deep for a long distance.

Polhena Beach near Matara is incredibly perfect for this. The bay is naturally protected by a massive, shallow coral reef. Because the reef breaks the heavy ocean swells far out, the water near the beach remains ankle to knee deep, completely flat, and incredibly warm.

Dickwella Beach is another brilliant option. The massive sandbars there create incredibly long, shallow stretches of water where toddlers can sit and play in the gentle ripples safely away from any scary crashing waves.
