Yes skipping the deep north specifically Jaffna on a standard two week trip is highly recommended for first time visitors. The travel distance is simply too massive and requires a huge logistical commitment.

If you force the north into a two week schedule you will spend agonizingly long days trapped inside a moving vehicle and will likely have to completely abandon visiting the beautiful southern beaches entirely to make the timing work.
