I want to sit for an hour of silent meditation inside the Dambulla cave temples. Is this culturally acceptable, and which cave is the least crowded.

It is highly acceptable and welcomed, provided you do not block the walkways or sit with your feet pointing at the Buddha statues. Cave Number 4 (The Western Temple) and Cave Number 5 (The Great New Temple) are usually the quietest and least crowded, as tour groups spend most of their time in the massive Cave 2.

Go right when they open at 7 AM. The air inside the caves is cool and the silence is profound before the buses arrive.

Sit in the lotus or half-lotus posture to keep your feet tucked away safely. It shows deep respect.
