We were barked at while walking home. Is it dangerous to walk the beaches after dark.

Yes, there are hundreds of stray dogs roaming freely on the beaches. While they sleep peacefully during the day, they become highly territorial at night and frequently bark aggressively at people walking past their patches of sand.
If you feel uncomfortable, just use the main lit roads behind the beachfront properties to walk back to your guesthouse after dark instead of walking directly on the dark sand.
Physical attacks are extremely rare. The dogs are just making noise. If a pack barks at you, do not run or act scared. Simply ignore them completely, walk at a normal, confident pace, and they will lose interest immediately.
