Everyone does Kandy to Ella. Is it worth taking the train the opposite way, from Ella to the final stop in Badulla?

Yes! It is the best-kept secret. The stretch from Ella to Badulla takes about 1 hour, passes right over the Nine Arch Bridge, and goes through stunning tea estates. Because 90% of tourists get off at Ella, the train is suddenly completely empty and you get the best window seats easily.

We did this. You can get off at Badulla, have a local lunch, see the Dunhinda Falls, and take a bus or tuk-tuk back to Ella. Highly recommend.

Wow, having an empty train carriage sounds amazing. I am definitely doing this route.
