Third class open door experience versus first class AC on the train to Ella
4 Answers from travellers
Do not book First Class if you want to take photos! First Class carriages have sealed windows and powerful air conditioning. You cannot stick your head out or sit in the doorways. The best option is Second Class Reserved. You get a guaranteed seat, but the windows and doors are fully open for that classic Sri Lankan train experience.
Third class unreserved is an amazing, authentic experience, but be prepared to stand for 3 hours squished against backpacks if you do not get a seat. It is chaotic but fun.
If you sit in the open doorway, hold on extremely tight. The train jerks suddenly on the mountain curves, and the drop offs are no joke.
Buy your reserved tickets at least 30 days in advance. The Nanu Oya to Ella route sells out instantly during peak season.

People outside stations offer to "help" buy tickets but charge large markups. They may buy cheap third-class tickets and sell as more expensive classes.
