Happened on the way down from the lion paws the other morning. Zipper, granola, then the bottle. A kid near us started screaming and the troop got louder. Do they actually snatch phones. Should we even carry food up.

Toque macaques on that rock are professional. No food in the side pocket, no banana in the hand, bottles zipped inside. They will take a loose phone if you set it on a wall for a selfie. Do not stare them down and do not feed them to make them go. If a troop is excited, stand still, bag on the chest, walk on. Wasps are the other reason they close a section - if you see a nest and a sign, that is not decoration.

They got our cashews at the summit. Not our cameras. I now climb with an empty bag and buy a king coconut after I am off the rock.

Same monkeys at Dambulla and Pidurangala. Same rules. The screaming is usually the humans.
