We booked a beautiful open-air homestay in Sigiriya. The owner warned us that wild monkeys might steal our breakfast if we eat outside. How aggressive are they.

The Toque Macaques around Sigiriya are incredibly bold. They will literally drop from the roof onto your table, grab a piece of toast or fruit, and run off before you can blink. They are not usually violent towards adults, but they are opportunistic. The homestay owners usually stand nearby with a stick or a slingshot to scare them away while you eat.

Do not smile at them! Baring your teeth is a sign of aggression in monkey language and it might make them challenge you for the food.

If a monkey gets its hands on your food, let it go. Do not fight it. They carry diseases and a scratch will ruin your holiday.
