Yes, the entire Sigiriya and Pidurangala area is situated directly within a major elephant corridor. Wild elephants frequently cross the main roads and roam the nearby jungle, especially after dark.

It is absolutely highly discouraged to walk back to your hotel in the dark after watching the sunset. Always arrange for a local tuk tuk driver to wait for you and drive you back safely.

During the day, it is completely safe. The noise of tourists keeps them deep in the forest, but once the sun goes down, the elephants reclaim the roads, making walking highly dangerous.
