I understand the train ride through the tea plantations is incredibly scenic. How do tourists secure reserved seats in advance before they sell out completely.

To secure train tickets from Kandy to Ella, you must book exactly 30 days in advance via the official government portal, seatreservation.railway.gov.lk. Tickets are released at 10 AM Sri Lanka time and the first class observation cars sell out almost instantly. If you cannot get a reserved seat online, you can simply turn up at the Kandy railway station on the day of travel and purchase an unreserved third class ticket. You might have to stand for a while, but you will definitely get on the train.

Honestly, second class reserved is often better than first class. First class has sealed windows and air conditioning, which means you cannot lean out to take photos or feel the cool mountain breeze. Second class has large open windows and a much better atmosphere.
