Vesak weekend means extreme traffic everywhere, but the road to Arugam Bay (A4) goes through the Lahugala National Park buffer zone. Wild elephants crossing the road here are incredibly common, especially at dusk. It is safe if you are in a large bus or car, but do not drive a scooter on this road at night.

Yes, buses often stop so passengers can grab free food or drinks from the roadside stalls.

Do not stick your arms or cameras out the window if the elephant walks close to the bus.

We got stuck behind a massive bull elephant on the bus for 30 minutes. It was incredible.
