Wild camping is generally prohibited in the Knuckles conservation area to protect the ecosystem. However, there are designated campsites managed by the Forest Department at Pitawala Pathana and near Deanston. You must obtain a permit and it is highly recommended to hire a local guide who knows the weather patterns. Mist can roll in very fast and make navigation impossible. Always practice leave no trace principles.
