The most famous drum used in traditional Kandyan dancing is the Geta Bera. It is a double headed wooden drum played intensely with bare hands, creating the rapid, rhythmic beats that drive the dancers.
In the southern Low Country dances, performers use the Yak Bera, which produces a slightly deeper, echoing sound perfect for the dramatic, spiritual healing rituals.
The Sabaragamuwa dance tradition uses the Davula drum. Unlike the others, the Davula is played using a stick in one hand and the bare palm on the other, creating a very unique polyrhythm.
