With trains, tuk-tuks, beaches, and some rough paths, what luggage do you recommend? Backpack, suitcase, or duffel?

A good quality backpack or rolling duffel is ideal. Hard-shell suitcases can be a pain on trains (limited space, have to lift them) and on sandy/beach paths. A 40-50L backpack or a sturdy rolling duffel that can be carried works best. Bring a small daypack for daily use. Wheels are useful in airports and hotels but you'll carry it a lot, so don't go too big or heavy.

Backpack or rolling duffel it is. Will repack accordingly.

I used a 45L backpack and it was perfect. Easy on trains and tuk-tuks. A small wheeled carry-on would have been annoying on some paths.
