The Sri Lankan traffic police frequently set up checkpoints and they absolutely will pull over a foreigner driving a tuk tuk. They are not necessarily looking for bribes; they are strictly checking if you have the correct paperwork.

Always act polite, smile, and immediately hand them your International Driving Permit with the specific Sri Lankan local endorsement stamp, plus the vehicle insurance papers. If your paperwork is perfectly legal, they will happily wave you on within two minutes.
