You are absolutely not required to wear white, though many local pilgrims choose to do so. Your priority must be warm, layered clothing. You will sweat profusely during the climb, but freeze at the summit due to the high winds.

For footwear, you do not need heavy hiking boots. A solid, highly comfortable pair of running shoes with good cushioning is actually much better for absorbing the repetitive impact of thousands of concrete stairs.

Wear a moisture wicking base layer, and carry a thick fleece or windbreaker in your backpack to put on the second you stop moving. Long comfortable hiking pants are perfect.
