I am visiting Sri Lanka in October and really hoping to see the massive blue whales. Will the whale watching boats be operating during my trip or is it the wrong season.

The official Mirissa whale watching season runs from November through April when the seas are calm and the blue whales migrate through the southern coast waters. October is unfortunately just before the season opens as the southwest monsoon is still affecting the south coast. Sightings during October are extremely rare and most reputable operators do not run tours.

If you are visiting in October consider going to Trincomalee on the east coast instead. The eastern whale watching season runs from May through October so you would catch the very tail end. Choose only certified operators who follow responsible distance guidelines and never chase the whales aggressively.
