Two decades in inbound tourism and this is the single most asked question so posting a reference When should I come The honest answer is more interesting than a single best month because the two monsoons mean there is no universally bad time only better and worse for specific regions and interests Let me lay out the year and invite refinement from fellow operators guides and travellers who came in different seasons

The operator reference assembled The key concept there is no single best time because two monsoons hit opposite coasts at opposite times the southwest monsoon (Yala) brings rain to the south west and hill country roughly May to September the northeast monsoon (Maha) brings rain to the north and east roughly October to January so at any given time one half of the island is in fine weather The peak season December to March this is the classic window the south and west coasts and the hill country are at their best dry and bright the whale watching off Mirissa the Adams Peak pilgrimage the cultural triangle all prime this is also the busiest and priciest and the famous trains and hotels book out The southwest monsoon May to September (now) the south west is wet but the EAST and NORTH are in their glory Trincomalee Nilaveli Pasikuda Arugam Bay for surf Jaffna all dry and beautiful the cultural triangle is workable the Gathering at Minneriya builds toward its peak this is the value season for the right regions The shoulder months April and September to October transition months April brings the Avurudu new year and lovely conditions broadly before the southwest sets in October is the inter monsoon with afternoon storms but green everywhere By interest beaches follow the dry coast (south west in winter east in summer) hill country best December to March wildlife the southern parks great in the dry first half of the year the Gathering August to October surf the south in winter the east in summer culture the cultural triangle is dry zone and good most of the year The summary I give clients tell me WHAT you want and WHEN you can come and I will tell you WHERE the answer is always a region not a verdict on the whole island there is no bad time only the right place for the time

Came in February for the south and hills and it was glorious but the crowds and prices were real the value of the off season east is genuinely tempting for a return

The cultural triangle deserves emphasis as the all rounder it sits in the dry zone and stays workable in nearly every season so culture focused trips have the most flexibility on timing

There is no bad time only the right place for the time is the reframe that finally made the monsoon confusion click I am here in June and heading east exactly as this implies
