Where is the best place to see Vesak lanterns in Colombo this May?
1 Answer from travellers
The area around Gangarama Temple and the Beira Lake is the epicenter of Vesak in Colombo. The Seema Malaka pavilion will be surrounded by hundreds of floating lanterns. Also, visit Bauddhaloka Mawatha for the massive thoranas and the many dansalas where locals offer free food and drinks to everyone. It is a beautiful time of communal sharing and spiritual celebration. Wear white to blend in with the devotees at the temples.

Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
