Which beaches around Tangalle are the most peaceful and least crowded.
1 Answer
Tangalle is absolutely the perfect destination for deserted beach lovers as it sits well beyond the typical south coast tourist strip that ends around Mirissa. The coastline around Tangalle stretches for kilometers with barely another soul in sight during weekdays even in peak season. Goyambokka Beach is a beautiful wide golden sand crescent framed by coconut palms with just a handful of small guesthouses tucked behind the tree line. The waves can be strong so swim cautiously and watch for rip currents. Marakolliya Beach is an incredibly long stretch of uninterrupted sand extending east toward Rekawa where sea turtles nest at night. Walking this beach at sunrise or sunset is a magical experience. Silent Beach near the Amanwella resort lives up to its name with virtually nobody around except the occasional fisherman hauling nets in the early morning. Hiriketiya Beach is technically a short drive further south but offers a completely different vibe as a tiny sheltered bay perfect for safe swimming and beginner surfing with a small but growing community of trendy cafes. For complete isolation head to Kudawella Beach near the famous Hummanaya blow hole. The wild rugged shoreline here feels like the edge of the world with massive waves crashing against dramatic rock formations. Swimming is dangerous at Kudawella but the scenery is breathtaking for walks and photography. All Tangalle area beaches have virtually no commercial development, no beach vendors hassling you, and no loud music. Accommodation ranges from luxury boutique hotels like Amanwella and Buckingham Place to simple family run guesthouses costing as little as twenty five dollars per night with breakfast included.
