I want to swim properly, not just paddle. Most south coast beaches seem to have strong waves. Any recommendations for safe swimming beaches?

Bentota has the calmest water on the south-west coast because of the river mouth and reef. The beach near the old Bentota Beach Hotel is protected. Weligama also has a nice sheltered bay area near the surfing point but further out it gets bigger waves.

If you go a bit further south, Hiriketiya has a beautiful sheltered cove but it gets crowded. For proper swimming without crowds, Bentota or even Kalutara north of Bentota are better.

We swam every day at Bentota without any issues. The water is much flatter than Hikkaduwa or Mirissa.
