I want to see the actual tea processing and do a proper tasting. Most places seem to just sell packaged tea. Any recommendations for an authentic experience?

Pedro Estate (just outside Nuwara Eliya) still does proper guided factory tours with withering, rolling, fermentation and firing explained. They also have a small tasting room. 'Mackwoods Tea' at Labookellie is also excellent and less crowded than the bigger ones.

We did Pedro and it was fascinating watching the tea go through the machines. The tea they served fresh was completely different from what we buy back home.

Avoid the big commercial ones on the main road to Kandy - they are basically gift shops now. Smaller estates like Pedro or Glenloch still process on site and welcome visitors.
