Which tea factory tours are best to visit near Nuwara Eliya.

The Pedro Tea Estate just outside Nuwara Eliya is hands down the most popular choice for first time visitors. The tour walks you through every single stage from withering and rolling to fermentation and final grading. Tours run every thirty minutes and cost around six hundred rupees per person including a complimentary cup of fresh estate tea at the end.
For a quieter and more in depth experience visit the Damro Labookellie Tea Centre on the road from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya. The tour is completely free and they have an excellent terrace cafe overlooking endless rolling tea gardens. Their factory shop sells single origin teas at significantly cheaper prices than tourist shops in Colombo.
Visit any tea factory before noon as production typically stops by early afternoon. After lunch the machinery sits idle and the tour becomes much less interesting. Wear closed shoes and avoid loose clothing as the rolling and sifting machines can be quite dusty inside the working areas.
