It is rare on the main A9 highway directly into Kandy, but very common on the roads connecting Dambulla/Habarana to Minneriya and Polonnaruwa. Elephants occasionally cross these roads at dusk. If you are in a large public CTB bus, you are completely safe. The drivers know exactly how to stop and wait patiently. Just enjoy the free safari from your window!

Absolutely NOT safe on a scooter at dusk. Elephants are very dark and almost invisible on the road at night.

We got stuck behind a massive bull elephant on the bus for 30 minutes. It was incredible.

Do not stick your arms or cameras out the window if the elephant walks close to the bus.

Is it safe to drive a rental scooter on these roads then.
