The biggest tourist traps in Galle are the gem and jewelry shops that tuk tuk drivers forcefully recommend. They receive massive commissions for bringing you there, and the stones are often vastly overpriced or outright fake.

Avoid the stilt fishermen situated just outside Galle on the main road to Koggala. They are not actually fishing. They are paid actors who will aggressively demand money as soon as you point a camera at them.

Also, be wary of restaurants directly facing the main squares inside the Fort. They often charge European prices for very mediocre Sri Lankan food. Walk down the smaller side streets for much better, authentic meals.

Scam Watch: galle

Fake Gem Export SchemeVerified

Someone befriends you and offers a "once in a lifetime" opportunity to buy gems at wholesale prices and resell them abroad for huge profit. They may show you fake export certificates. The gems are worthless glass or low-quality stones.

Beach Restaurant Menu ScamVerified

Restaurants without visible prices. Bill arrives with inflated charges (500 LKR coconut becomes 1500 LKR). "Service charges" added without disclosure.
