Our jeep driver picked us up hungover from our hotel in Tissa. At the gate he asked for an extra 8000 rupees saying park fees increased overnight. Is this a scam.

Absolutely a scam. Park fees do not randomly increase overnight without a massive government announcement. Drivers prey on tired tourists. Insist on walking to the official DWC ticket counter to pay the fee yourself.

This happened to us. We asked for the printed government receipt and he suddenly remembered he made a calculation mistake.

Do not hand him any cash. If he refuses to let you pay at the counter, step out of the jeep and report him to the park wardens.
