We are four surfers arriving with massive board bags. Is it worth booking a private van with a roof rack from Colombo Airport directly to our Midigama homestay, or should we brave the coastal train.

With four people and massive board bags, booking a private van is vastly superior. The coastal train does not have dedicated luggage racks for large surfboards, and getting four board bags onto a crowded train at Colombo Fort during commuter hours is a literal nightmare. A private van splits four ways is very affordable, drops you directly at your homestay door, and saves you hours of stress after a long flight.

Do not even attempt the train with that much gear. The aisles on the train are narrow, and locals will get very annoyed if you are blocking the walkways with 8-foot coffin bags.
