South coast is a write-off this weekend - is Mount Lavinia dinner actually a thing or a 1980s hotel brochure
We dumped Mirissa. One night left in Colombo. Someone said take the coastal train to Mount Lavinia, walk the beach, eat crab, sleep. August reviews look like brown sea and a wedding buffet. Worth a taxi from Cinnamon Gardens or we just eat in Colombo 3.

Mount is a suburb beach, not Unawatuna. In August the sea is for walking, not swimming. Sunset-and-crab at a beach hotel is a real local/tourist habit and the train from Fort is part of the charm if it is running on time. If it is dumping, a Colombo 3 / 4 restaurant is saner. Do not expect turquoise.
We did the hotel terrace, rain paused, crab was good, beach was a dog-walking strip. Fine last night. Not a destination day.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
