We are in Colombo this weekend but realized it is Vesak. Are all the nightclubs actually shut down, or do some still operate for tourists.

They are completely and legally shut down. Vesak is the most sacred Buddhist festival, and the government enforces a strict nationwide ban on the sale of alcohol and the operation of entertainment venues. Even hotel bars are locked. Do not attempt to find an underground party; police raids are common and the fines are massive. Enjoy the street lanterns instead.

Just grab a King Coconut from a street vendor and enjoy the free food stalls (Dansal) everywhere.

It is actually beautiful to see a whole city pause partying to focus on spirituality for two days.
