The gardens are huge. Do we need to worry about walking off the paved paths.

The Peradeniya gardens are incredibly heavily manicured and actively maintained by massive teams of groundskeepers every single day. While it is technically a tropical environment encountering a dangerous venomous snake near the main walking paths is exceptionally highly unlikely.

You can confidently sit on the massive open grass lawns for a picnic without fear. However if you decide to venture deep into the thick unmaintained bamboo thickets near the river edge you should always watch your step simply as a general tropical precaution.
