You absolutely cannot swim in Kandy Lake. It is highly polluted and strictly prohibited. Your best option is to buy a daily pool pass at a luxury hotel like the Mahaweli Reach Hotel or the OZO Kandy which offer stunning clean pools.

Do not attempt to swim randomly in the Mahaweli River. The water levels can change incredibly rapidly due to the upstream hydro dams and there are occasional reports of crocodiles in the quieter bends.

For a natural experience you can travel slightly outside the city towards the Victoria Dam area. There are specific eco lodges along the river that offer safe designated swimming spots completely free of strong currents.
