Sri Lankan homestay hosts are incredibly accommodating, but their default cooking uses heavy coconut milk, oil, and roasted spices. If you want a wellness diet, you must explicitly request it the day before. Ask them for "Kola Kenda" (herbal porridge) for breakfast, and simple boiled vegetables or clear broths for dinner. Tell them "No oil, no chili".

Also ask them not to use Maldive Fish (Umbulakada) if you want the meals to be strictly vegetarian.

The Kola Kenda porridge is amazing. It looks like green sludge but tastes incredibly earthy and fresh.
