Best family-friendly beaches in Sri Lanka for toddlers — calm water, safe, and easy to access?
Travelling to Sri Lanka with a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old in late February. My main priority is calm, shallow water — we need beaches where waves aren't powerful and the undertow isn't dangerous for small kids.
We're basing ourselves in the south/west. Would prefer somewhere with beach shacks or restaurants nearby so we can eat easily.
Some names I've seen mentioned: Bentota, Kosgoda, Induruwa, Negombo, Beruwala. Which of these is actually the calmest and most family-friendly? Are there other spots I've missed?

I've grown up on the south-west coast and take my own kids to these beaches regularly. For toddlers with calm-water priority:
Top pick: Bentota / Induruwa
This stretch of coast (roughly between Aluthgama and Kosgoda) has a natural lagoon on the landward side and a beach facing the sea. The lagoon side is completely flat and shallow — perfect for toddlers who can't swim. Most hotels here have both lagoon and sea access. The sea itself can have waves but nothing like Unawatuna or Hikkaduwa.
Second pick: Negombo (especially the north end)
Very calm water, gentle slope into the sea, loads of beach restaurants. Easy from Colombo airport if you arrive tired. Not the most beautiful beach but the safest for small kids.
Avoid for toddlers:
- Mirissa (waves, slope)
- Unawatuna (waves, crowd)
- Hikkaduwa (strong currents in spots)
Late February: This is peak dry season for the south-west. Water will be calm and sky will be clear. Excellent timing for your trip.
We did exactly this trip with a 3-year-old last December. Stayed in Bentota — Lagoon side was brilliant for our daughter. She paddled in knee-deep water for hours with zero risk. Beach shacks with fresh seafood right there. Highly recommend Bentota for your situation.
Kosgoda is worth mentioning — it's just north of Bentota, even quieter, and there's a sea turtle hatchery there your 5-year-old will love. You can release baby turtles into the sea (small fee, genuinely educational). Beach is calm and the turtle project is one of the real ones, not a tourist trap.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
