I am hoping to photograph the endemic Sri Lanka Blue Magpie in the Knuckles Mountain Range. Are there homestays near Corbetts Gap that cater to birdwatchers.

Yes, the small villages around Hunnasgiriya and the road leading down to Meemure have excellent, rustic homestays. The hosts are incredibly knowledgeable about the local ecology. The Blue Magpie is frequently spotted early in the morning near the misty ravines of Corbetts Gap. If you tell your host your goal, they will often assign a local village guide to walk the trails with you before sunrise.

Bring a good macro lens too. The Knuckles range has incredible endemic leaf-nosed lizards that your homestay guide can point out sleeping on the branches.

It gets incredibly windy and cold at Corbetts Gap. Dress in layers, because once the sun comes up and burns off the mist, it gets very hot.

The food in those highland homestays is amazing. They make Kithul roti and serve it with strong black tea right from the local estates.

Leech socks are absolutely mandatory in that area! The damp cloud forest is crawling with them, especially in the early morning when the birds are most active.
