We took the local bus from Matara to our hostel. The conductor charged us 500 LKR for our backpacks but locals did not pay for luggage. Scam.

If your backpacks were large (like 60L+) and took up a physical seat or blocked the aisle, it is standard CTB policy to charge for an extra passenger seat. However, 500 LKR for a short local trip is too high (a local fare is usually 50-100 LKR). He definitely overcharged the seat fare. Always ask for the printed machine ticket; they cannot fake the price on the printout.

Good to know. We will demand the printed ticket next time.

If you keep your bag on your lap, they cannot charge you anything.

It is just a few dollars, sometimes it is easier to just pay it rather than fighting on a hot, moving bus.
