DIG Senadheera's numbers dropped this evening: 1,749 dead, 617 of them motorcyclists, 122 pillion. We have a rented scooter and a 6 km ride to the guesthouse in the dark, after drums, maybe rain. Helmets are the cracked ones from the shop. Is this the night we eat the 2,000-rupee tuk and leave the bike till morning.

Yes. Eat the tuk. Night + festival traffic + a tired brain + a cracked helmet is exactly the Venn diagram in that briefing. Collect the scooter in daylight. If you ride anyway, both heads covered, no pillion heroics, no "short cut" through a still-closed street.

We pushed the bike onto a hotel courtyard and paid 500 to leave it. Best 500 of the week.

Checkpoints after Perahera are real because the city is full of visitors on rented 125s. A cracked helmet is a conversation you will lose.
