If you are waiting near the Kandy train station, just walk a few hundred meters towards the Kandy Clock Tower. You will find several bustling local eateries, often called Muslim Hotels, serving massive, incredibly cheap portions of highly authentic rice and curry.
Another completely safe and slightly cleaner option is eating at the food court located on the top floor of the Kandy City Centre mall, which is just a short walk away. They have excellent local curry stalls with great hygiene standards.
The Kandy Muslim Hotel is a legendary spot nearby. Do not let the name confuse you; it is a restaurant, not a place to sleep. They serve the absolute best crispy samosas and spicy kottu roti in the city.
