The thick vibrant red laterite clay found on the hiking trails around Ella and Sigiriya is incredibly notorious for causing permanent stains. Standard cheap street laundry services simply use basic detergent and cold water which absolutely will not remove deeply set red mud from white fabric.

Your absolute best solution is to simply ask the staff at your guesthouse. For a very small tip they will usually happily use an outdoor high pressure hose and a stiff brush to meticulously scrub the thick red clay off your boots and clothes perfectly leaving them in the hot sun to dry.
