I am visiting the north west coast and want to see the salt harvesting process. Is there a specific time of day for the best light and is access restricted.

The Mannar salt pans are stunning for photography, especially during the harvest season which peaks in the dry months. Early morning at 6:30 AM or late afternoon at 5:00 PM provides the best mirror like reflections in the evaporation ponds. Most pans are visible from the main road, but if you want to enter the premises, you should ask for permission at the local salt factory office. The contrast between the white salt piles and the blue sky is spectacular.
