Ambewela is a beautifully tiny highly historic rural railway station. While they do sell completely unreserved second and third class tickets directly at the counter on the day of travel you absolutely cannot purchase reserved first class tickets there at the last minute.
Reserved seating for the scenic highland route sells out entirely weeks in advance. You must proactively book these specific tickets completely online through the official Sri Lanka Railways portal well before you arrive in the country.
If you only have an unreserved ticket simply board the train when it arrives at Ambewela and stand near the open doorways. The completely unobstructed breeze and perfect photo opportunities from the open door are frequently much better than sitting inside a sealed air conditioned carriage anyway.
