Are cameras strictly forbidden inside the main shrines or can we shoot without flash.

Yes, you are allowed to take photographs inside the main shrines of the Dambulla Cave Temple to capture the incredible statues and ceiling frescoes. However, you must absolutely turn your camera flash completely off, as the intense bright light causes irreversible damage to the ancient, fragile pigments.

The most important rule, which the guards strictly enforce, is that you must never pose for a selfie or a photograph with your back turned towards any Buddha statue. Always face the statues respectfully, or take photos of the room without people standing in the frame.
