We are staying in Sigiriya. Can we realistically hire a driver to take us to Polonnaruwa for the day, see the ruins, and come back before dinner?

Yes, absolutely. It is a very common route. The drive from Sigiriya to Polonnaruwa takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Leave at 8:00 AM, explore the ruins by bicycle for 4 hours, have lunch near the lake, and you will be back in Sigiriya by 4:00 PM.

We did exactly this. Our hotel in Sigiriya arranged a tuk-tuk for the whole day. It cost about 6000 LKR total, and the driver waited for us while we explored.
