The cafes in Hiriketiya bay charge 2500 rupees for a smoothie bowl. Where can we get a cheap, massive local breakfast right after surfing at dawn.

Walk out of the bay to the main Dickwella road. Turn left towards the town center. Look for the small, bustling local "hotels" (cafes). They start serving fresh String Hoppers (Idiyappam) with dhal and coconut sambol by 6:30 AM. You can eat a massive, authentic meal that will keep you full until dinner for about 300 LKR.

Do they serve real coffee at the local spots.

No, local spots serve instant Nescafe or strong, sweet black tea. For espresso, you have to pay western prices at the beach cafes.

Embrace the plain tea! It is the true local way to start the day.

Muni’s Roti Shop is great too, they do sweet coconut rotis that are amazing with hot tea.

The bakery tuk-tuks (choon paan) also drive down into the bay around 7 AM. Buy some fish buns straight from them.
