Hiriketiya beach has great cafes, but I want cheap, authentic local food after surfing. Are there any hidden local gems within walking distance.

Yes, walk out of the bay and up the steep hill to the main Dickwella road (about 10 mins). Look for "Roti Huts" or small stalls with clay pots. They serve massive, fiery rice and curry buffets for 500-700 LKR. "Garlic Cafe" is a slightly tourist-adapted local spot just on the edge of the bay that is also very cheap and delicious.

Garlic Cafe is amazing. You literally just pile your plate high from the clay pots and pay at the end.

If you have a scooter, ride 5 minutes into Dickwella town. The Muslim restaurants there serve incredible cheap biryani.

Sri Lankan buffets are heavily vegetarian! Dhal, pumpkin, green beans, and gotukola sambol are staples.
