We had one morning before Kandy and could not see the top of Sigiriya from the guesthouse. Wondered if the other rock was just as cloudy and whether you still pay at the temple if you might turn around halfway.

Pidurangala is often in the same cloud. The difference is you are looking across at Lion Rock, so if the cloud is a hat on Sigiriya only, Pidurangala can still be a view. If the whole sky is one grey lid, both are a muddy stair-master. Wait 40 minutes with a tea. These cells move. Last-ticket mood at Pidurangala is looser than CCF Sigiriya - it is a temple donation at the base, cash, then you climb. Pages disagree on the number this year, so confirm at the desk, do not pre-pay a tuk-tuk guide fee as the ticket.

We bailed on Sigiriya at 6:20, climbed Pidurangala, the cloud lifted at 7:10, got the postcard. Knees: the last boulder scramble is ruder than Sigiriya's iron stairs. Not a grandmother hike in the wet.
