I am taking the train down the coast. Which side of the train has the best ocean views, and is it hard to get a seat?

Sit on the RIGHT side of the train when facing the direction of travel (heading south). The train literally hugs the coastline, and the ocean is right outside the right-side windows.

Avoid taking this train between 4 PM and 6 PM. It is rush hour for local commuters heading home, and you will be squashed against the walls.

It can be very hard to get a seat in 2nd or 3rd class unreserved. Try to get on at Maradana Station (one stop BEFORE Colombo Fort) to grab a window seat before the massive crowd boards at Fort.

If you are taking the Express trains, the doors are often kept open. Standing by the open door on the right side is honestly better than sitting. Just hold on tight!

Boarding at Maradana is a genius tip. I will definitely do that to secure a right-side window seat.
