Yes, most of the coastal trains going to Matara or Beliatta will stop at Ahangama. It is a main station for the surf towns. You do not need to get off at Galle. Just confirm with the station master in Colombo that your specific train is not a super-express that skips smaller stops.

Taking boards on the train is much easier than the bus, but aim for a weekday. Weekends are packed.
