Art writer so let me show you the creative Colombo the tourist skip narrative misses it entirely There IS a real contemporary scene the galleries Colombo has a genuine contemporary art world commercial galleries and project spaces showing Sri Lankan modern and contemporary artists (the country has a celebrated lineage from the 43 Group modernists onward) seek out the established galleries and the newer artist run spaces the scene is small but serious and the work engages the islands history and present powerfully Design and the iconic store the design and lifestyle scene centres on the famous handloom and design houses (the textile and homeware names that put Sri Lankan design on the map) where the textiles ceramics and craft are modern and beautifully made not tourist tat the design store as cultural institution is very Colombo Architecture for the design lover Geoffrey Bawa the great tropical modernist architect his Colombo town house (now open to visit) and his work are a pilgrimage for design people and the single best window into Sri Lankan modern aesthetics do this Creative spaces and craft the artist studios the design collectives the contemporary craft and the cafe and gallery hybrids cluster in certain neighbourhoods ask locally for the current spaces (the scene shifts) Modern craft and textiles for the modern not souvenir buy the handloom textiles the contemporary ceramics the designer batik and the craft that reinterprets tradition this is where Sri Lankan making is alive and current Worth a day absolutely a Colombo culture day the Bawa house a couple of galleries the design stores a creative neighbourhood and good food redeems the city entirely for the culture seeker so go for the galleries the Bawa architecture the design houses and the contemporary craft Colombo rewards the curious far more than the skip it reputation suggests

Add a good independent bookshop or two and the cafe gallery hybrids for a relaxed creative wander Colombo does the modern cafe and culture mix really well now it is changed a lot recently

One practical note book the Bawa house visit in advance it runs on set tour times and fills and pair it with the nearby design stores and a good lunch for a perfect culture afternoon plan the timing it is not a walk in

The handloom design houses are where I send everyone for gifts modern Sri Lankan textiles and homeware that are beautifully made and proudly local far better than the souvenir strip and the story behind the weaving is lovely
