While it is not legally mandatory for tourists, wearing white during Vesak is highly expected and recommended. It is a sign of immense respect, purity, and mourning for the Buddha. During this holy weekend, you will see almost all locals dressed entirely in white. If you wear brightly colored tourist clothes, you will stand out significantly and might be denied entry to inner shrines.

I bought a simple white linen shirt in Pettah market for 1000 rupees. Made the temple visit much smoother.

Make sure your shoulders and knees are fully covered as well, regardless of the color you wear.
