We are in Colombo for Vesak weekend Do tourists absolutely need to wear pure white clothing to visit the temples and lantern displays

Yes, shoes are fine on the street. You only remove them when stepping onto actual temple grounds.

I bought a simple white linen shirt in Pettah market for 1000 rupees. Made the temple visit much smoother.
